Description

Comedy legend Bob Hope (My Favorite Brunette, Road to Morocco) is at his very best in the hilarious comedy-thriller The Cat and the Canary. A decade after the death of an eccentric millionaire, his remaining relatives gather for the reading of the will at his abandoned mansion set deep in the Louisiana bayous. Tension builds after his niece Joyce (Paulette Goddard, The Ghost Breakers) is named the sole inheritor and it is revealed that one of the other relatives will get everything if the heiress goes insane within the next 30 days. The timid Wally (Hope) vows to protect Joyce who must spend the night in the haunted mansion along with her jealous relatives, a creepy maid and a homicidal maniac who has just escaped from a nearby sanitarium. An equal mix of both frights and fun, this unforgettable classic has become the gold standard for the horror-comedy genre. Directed by Elliott Nugent (Nothing But the Truth) and based on the classic John Willard (The Mask of Fu Manchu) play.Special Features:-NEW Audio Commentary by Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin -Theatrical Trailer -Optional English Subtitles

First, I intended to get Ghost Breakers and then I learned that this movie preceded it, so decided to get this one as well. Was not disappointed and was actually pleasantly surprised.Story follows a reading of the will in a creepy bayou mansion. One of the heirs (played by the beautiful Paulette Goddard) learns that she has inherited the entire estate. However, there is a caveat: If she should display mental illness or meet some untimely end, the estate goes to another of the heirs whose name is kept secret. Naturally, an unseen antagonist tries to drive Goddard crazy and the presence of a crazed killer nicknamed "The Cat" isn't making matters easier. Thankfully, Goddard has an ally on her side in the form of a hilarious radio comedian played masterfully by Bob Hope as he tries to help her keep her sanity as well as her newly acquired estate. There is so much good to say about this film. The setting in an old bayou estate really sets the creepy mood. It's filmed very well and gives a nice sense of foreboding. Then you have Bob Hope supplying his masterfully delivered comedy that really helps to lighten the mood in all the right places. It doesn't get too scary or silly. It has a really good balance throughout.Kino Lorber did a fair job with this one. The picture and sound are really good. Not much in the way of features. There is just a feature commentary along with a string of movie trailers, mostly featuring Bob Hope's other films such as his "Road To" comedies that he made with Bing Crosby. Still, they're entertaining and the commentary is informative.Good film to get. Highly recommended for fans of old horror and screwball comedy movies.
