Description

A collection of 13 short stories spanning two decades in the lives of van de Wetering's Amsterdam Cops Amsterdam isn’t exactly a hotbed of violent crime, but wrongdoing does occur, and the most bizarre cases tend to be passed to Grijpstra and de Gier. In one they investigate the death of a handsome oceanographer whose corpse is found amidst his tanks of shiny living mussels. In another they strong-arm a brutal crime lord whose henchman threatens the sergeant’s cat. Yet another leads them to uncover a most unusual murder weapon: a chocolate Easter bunny. With the curious blend of wit and the macabre readers have come to expect from the pen of Janwillem van de Wetering, the Amsterdam Cops have a way of seeing to it that justice, ultimately, is done.

The present volume THE SERGEANT'S CAT COLLECTED STORIES is the third published collection of Amsterdam Cop stories. As noted above the first version was printed, as THE SERGEANT'S CAT AND OTHER STORIES in 1987 in hardcover by Pantheon, containing 14 stories. Many thanks to David Eastwood for his detailed analysis of the 1987 edition in his review. In 1999, Soho issued a revised version of the collection with the title THE AMSTERDAM COPS: COLLECTED STORIES. This contains 13 stories; dropping "A Great Sight", "A Tale With An End", "Jacob Sanders' Final Solution", "The Yoga Yo-Yo", and "The New Disciple" from the prior book BUT adding "The Letter in the Peppermint Jar", "Holiday Patrol", "Hup Three", and "Bongo Bungler".Soho Crime reissued the collection for the third time (current version) in September 2015 but changed the title to THE SERGEANT'S CAT: COLLECTED STORIES (per the title page), with the SAME contents as THE AMSTERDAM COPS: COLLECTED STORIES. To make things a bit more confusing, the title on the cover is THE SERGEANT'S CAT AND OTHER STORIES - yes, the same as the first collection published in 1987! The contents of the current book aren't readily obvious since the table of contents is not viewable using the LOOK INSIDE feature above, so I checked by searching for the title through Google Books and viewing the Table of Contents there. So yes, there are two different van de Wetering Amsterdam Cop story collections in three separate books, two with similar titles, but significant differences in contents between the first and the latter two books. If you buy this book, IMHO, it is worth hunting down the first collection to get the 5 extra stories. This is pretty good stuff!
