This book stems from a tragedy, yet manages to be uplifting and valuable with respect to both dealing with heartbreak and the power of love, whether animal or human. The story is, at first, deceptively simple, yet proves to be so powerful. How do we deal with grief? How do we move on when the unthinkable happens? As an animal lover, I found the depiction of the healing power of a pet's love to ring very true. This book is able to walk that line between conveying events and emotions in a manner that children can understand and providing lessons for any reader, young or old. I believe this book would be a valuable tool for any parent or educator wanting to teach children about not only the sadness that life can bring but how to deal with loss of any type, as well as to know that hope and healing and love are possible despite tragedy and loss of this we love (animal or human). We adults are never too old to learn that lesson. The illustrations are beautiful; I really appreciated that they are geared both to children and adults and are so visually stunning.
